a sense of abandon / but not a lack of discipline

a project by Anne Steves

Author: Anne Steves

Anne Steves is an interdisciplinary artist exploring themes of connection. Her practice looks at methods of making that connect us to each other, the landscape, and sometimes other species. These have included string games, posters, writing and the making of blankets, fishing lures and rugs. She is interested in the fragile nature of these connections which often require the efforts and trust of multiple participants and documents both moments of connection and what happens when these efforts fail or prove to be unfulfilling. Her process involves periods of site-specific research followed by material and gestural experiments that test our ability to connect with some-body or some-place beyond our own. Anne Steves was born and raised in Wales and emigrated to Canada in 2000. She lives and works in the Village of Cumberland on Vancouver Island. Steves received a BFA in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and an MFA in Studio Practices from the University of Victoria. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and the UK. She has participated in the Canadian Craft Biennial, the NOVA Young Welsh Artist exhibition, the Salt Spring National Art Prize and the MAWA Winnipeg artist residency.
